Oyster shells are a natural form of calcium carbonate which can help support egg shell quality in laying birds, and bone development in young birds.
A co-product of oysters harvested for food, they have been cleaned and processed into smaller pieces that can help the break-down of forages and whole grains in the bird’s gizzard.
Larger grit particles tend to be less soluble and will be retained in the upper digestive tract for longer. Calcium is released more slowly which may be important to support shell formation during the night when birds may be reluctant to eat. Access to grit provides free ranging growing and laying birds the opportunity to consume additional calcium which may be lacking in forages, grains, or titbits. Grain is especially low in calcium relative to the needs of laying birds.
